Abstract

This paper presents a fit for use approach to start-up SPI in small organizations. It is based on the experiences of a two and a half years regional SPI project with 10 software companies. The paper covers the following topics: SPI starting point in small software organizations, SPI initiation, assessments and improvement. As a conclusion key issues of a successful SPI are given and the organizational SPI diffusion is discussed. In principle, the experiences are transferable and this paper gives an experience based guidance to both practitioners of SPI and authorities or research institutes promoting the use of SPI models.
