Abstract

One of the ongoing discussions in the intelligent tutoring system community is whether user oriented tutoring sys tems are more effective when compared to the systems that do not account for user profiles. The goal of this paper is to make a comparative evaluation between a class of user oriented systems and a class of flexible interactive systems. The flexible interactive system accounts for the user’s an swers but unlike the user oriented system it does not ac count for the user profile. We present statistical simulations and classroom experiments that provide background for the system evaluation. We will argue that the user oriented sys tem is advantageous because it requires fewer operations compared to the interactive system.
