An improved closed-loop stability measure is derived for digital controller structures with finite-word-length (FWL) implementation, which takes into account the number of trivial elements in a controller realization. A practical pro cedure is presented to design sparse controller realizations with good FWL closed-loop stability characteristics. A case study shows that the proposed design procedure yields computationally efficient controller realizations with en hanced FWL closed-loop stability performance.
