Fault detection techniques are more efficient when suitable dynamical modelling information is incorporated in the structure of diagnostic systems. In this paper the modelling, simulation and model validation process of a hydraulic system is presented as well as the use of the modelling information for the detection of faults by a diagnostic expert system. This expert system detects real time faults working in parallel with dynamic industrial automated processes.
