Abstract

Lately, the interest by application of power electronic devices in electric power distribution systems has increased. Consequently, several new devices have been proposed especially to be applied to medium voltage networks. In this paper, potential applications, economic benefits and technical problems that may result from the inclusion of such devices are addressed. Moreover, it is fundamental to have efficient computational tools to analyze and compare technical and economical benefits of these devices. In this context, an important issue is how to model the voltage source converters, since they are the building block of various new devices, this problem is also analyzed here.
