In this paper we study the optimal control of systems monitored by an abstract second order in time hemivariational inequalities with damping. First exploiting a surjectivity result we show that the hemivariational inequality has a global weak solution. Then, for distributed parameter control systems we consider the Bolza and the time optimal control problems. We deliver conditions that guarantee the existence of optimal solutions.
