Abstract

The focus of this ongoing study is to examine the implications of online learning in a Technical Writing Course and ask a number of related questions about the impact of collaborative learning on the linguistic insecurity of students. One hundred and eighty four (184) students took part in this study; all were second–year students taking an advanced writing course in Technical Writing and studying Materials Engineering at Nanyang Technological University Singapore. What I would like to explore is whether an online platform, with the possibility of anonymity, can surmount some of the basic problems related to the linguistic insecurity of students, and in doing so, promote more effective collaborative learning.
