Abstract

A fuzzy beer filtration control system has been developed and tested with the view of optimising the filtration process within a brewery. The filtration process is known to be nonlinear and ill-defined. Significantly longer filtration runs have been recorded with filters running longer within their sludge capacity and pressure constraints. This leads to lower running costs, reduced filter down-times and greater consistency in achieving desired beer clarity the first time through the filter. Human expert knowledge of the filtration process is embedded within the linguistic framework of the fuzzy controller.
