Temporal reasoning, statistical temporal registration, temporal matching.
This work presents techniques for using temporal patterns to perform temporal projection and explanation. Here, we consider that temporal pattern may be expressed as a sequence of states, an uncertain evolution from a current state to another of a set of possible states, or as a continuous function of time. Reasoning in each of these situations would consist of matching the observed states to pattern states. The appropriateness of a matching technique depends on the representation of the patterns. Three matching techniques are presented here for the three types of pat terns identiļ¬ed in this work and examples from common sense reasoning, medicine, and research and development planning are presented.
