Abstract

Results are presented for reconstructing detailed 3D surface models of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid artery from magnetic resonance images. The method assumes a set of axial images has been segmented into subregions, includ ing but not limited to artery lumen, artery wall, necrotic core, and calciļ¬cation. The surfaces are generated using an energy minimizing interpolation of the segmentation re sults followed by generation of an isosurface. Applications of the models are also discussed involving surgical plan ning, measurement of plaque vulnerability, and monitoring of plaque progression.
