Abstract

The vestibular system is responsible for the maintenance of balance. The purpose of this work is to present the development of a tool to access the vestibular function non-invasively. Semicircular canals are individually stimulated, generating eye movements through the vestibulo-ocular reflex. Images of the eye are captured under infrared illumination and digitized. This paper presents the design and implementation of an algorithm to quantify these eye movements in real time, using image processing techniques in the space domain. The algorithm was validated using synthetic sequences of images and applied to real video images obtained from normal subjects.
