Abstract

In our previous work[1], we have shown that VoIP with an AMR speech codec has potential to provide better speech quality. In this paper, we propose new algorithms of adaptive codec mode assignment for better adaptation to the network conditions in a view of long-term. Both the 'cumulative number of packets lost' parameter in the header of RTCP packet and the distribution characteristics of the assigned codec modes during a RTCP interval are used to assign the codec mode adaptively. Packet loss rate are compared depending on the codec mode assignment algorithms, and discussed with our findings.
