This paper presents a proposal for automating some decision-making tasks of thematic map design by using a knowledge-based system. The increasing use of geographic information systems and computer graphics software has allowed more and more people to produce maps, but many of those maps are not designed based upon any specific cartographic knowledge. In order to improve cartographic communication, a higher level of automating decision-making can be added to these kinds of software. In this work, the use of intelligent systems techniques is evaluated for each step of map design. After examining thematic map concepts, some knowledge based systems for map design are reviewed and an ontology for thematic map design domains is proposed.
