The present work studies the combination of wavelet and fractal image compression techniques for gray level still image. A multiresolution representation provides a simple hierarchical framework for interpreting the image information. A wavelet representation of the image is chosen as it can approximate closely the multiresolution representation based on differences of information available at two successive resolutions. A novel method of fractal image compression is combined with the hope of exploiting the self-similarities in the wavelet representation at different resolution.
