Volume Rendering, Unstructured Grid, Visualization
A new method is presented that approximates volume rendering by a surface-based approach. On the assumption that sampling points along a viewing ray are arranged uniformly, they form a group of concentric spheres around a viewing point. These spheres are extracted as triangulated isosurfaces located at the same distance from a viewing point. The triangles are scan converted on a frame buffer in back-to-front order to generate a volume rendering image. Commercial graphics hardware capable of rendering partially transparent triangles can be used to improve the performance. The method was applied to numerical simulation results and its effectiveness was verified.
