Abstract

The process of creating a new image of an object un der arbitrary pose and illumination given an example is known as image synthesis or re-rendering. Existing class-based re-rendering methods require large basis im age sets and precise pixel alignment for accurate synthe sis, and have focused primarily on gray-scale images. In this paper, two new algorithms for color image synthesis are presented. Based on the novel concept of the surface reflectance quotient, these techniques produce high qual ity re-renderings given only a small basis set constructed using a single object. The image synthesis ability of the two new techniques is demonstrated using both synthetic and real images.
