Abstract

This paper deals with the simulation of 2D shocks (formation and propagation) using the SPH technique to solve the shallow water equations. After describing how to manage the method to work this mathematical problem, the main skills employed in the computational code are shortly recalled. We show that acceptable quantitative pictures of the flow can be achieved comparing the results of the simulations to images shot in laboratory during several ad hoc experiments that mimic a dam break wave and the subsequent plane submersion.
