SPH method, free surface unsteadyflow, hydraulic jump.
This paper deals with the simulations of complex free surface flows obtained with the lagrangian SPH techniqueto show its power in working hydraulic problems. After a short review of the method and the mathematical model the main skills employed in the computational code are recalled. Then the simulation of a rapidly varied unsteady flow mainly controlled by inertia and pressure gradient effects (the impact of an accelerated flow on a wall) is presented and the results compared to laboratory experiments. Finally the case of a strongly dissipative turbulent steady flow with surface recirculation (the free hydraulic jump) is reported, and the results are compared to literature data.
