Abstract

The effectiveness of a monitoring network within a real-time flood forecasting system can be evaluated through the analysis of the performances of the forecasting system. Given some performance indices, it is possible to study the variation of such indices depending on the number of gauges of the monitoring network. This procedure has been applied to a river flood forecasting system based on a rainfall-runoff model which links the data coming from a rain-gauge network to the river stage at a given section of the downstream channel.
