Abstract

The objective of this paper is to investigate virtual reality technologies for developing an Internet virtual marine ecological museum. The museum consists of three exhibition halls. The first hall displays fishes in fresh water, including creeks, rivers, and dams in Taiwan and other countries. The second hall exhibits marine ecology and creatures of different species in the oceans. The third hall is an undersea transparent tunnel where we can see sharks, tunas, and lovely butterfly fishes swimming around beautiful coral reefs. Since the museum is developed by virtual reality technology, it provides 3D visual effect and interactive interface. Users can proceed with observation and learning activities through network, and they can also breed fishes in virtual aquarium to increase learning interest. Therefore, it can help us understand the marine ecology and promote the protection of oceanic environment.
