The high value of capacitance in high voltage power cables leads to large charging current in cables. The charging current may cause mal-operation of the protective relays. Current differential relays are usually used in cable protection especially for short distances. This paper presents a new technique to avoid the effect of charging current on the current differential relay performance. The basic idea is to use only the active current component in the relay comparison. The simulation results show a stable and reliable operation of the technique under different operating conditions
