This paper proposes a MPEG-7 compliant multimedia indexing system. The so-called AMIS (Automated Multimedia Indexing System), developed using Java technology, includes a complete chain of data and metadata processing (annotation, description management and search engine), with an user-friendly interface and support for an extended set of multimedia content types (still images, audio, videos, 3D data) represented within various formats. The system adopts the MPEG-7 approach for structural descriptions of AV content, and implements generic and dedicated media segments and recursive decomposition tools, taking full advantage of the MPEG 7 interoperable multigranular and hierarchical descriptions.
