In ATM networks a traffic shaper is necessary to obtain a traffic pattern that can be easily policed, and a policing mechanism is necessary to enforce the compliance of a connection to a negotiated traffic contract. It is advisable an adequate relationship between this two traffic controls so that traffic shaping can enhance the policing function features. We present in this paper the combination between a shaper and a policer and the consequent improvement of the results versus only policing mechanism is used.
