In this paper, a technique to estimate the maximum number of users allowed in the physical layer of UMTS FDD Uplink is presented. This number is estimated using a closed-form expression of the error probability (BER) in an AWGN channel, and for a correlation receiver. Among other factors, the maximum number of users depends on the cross-correlation properties of the codes employed in the different channels transmitted, so, a study of the cross-correlation properties of these codes has also been performed.
