Beowulf style clusters have become commonplace, but generally use x86 or alpha processors. We will present results obtained through the construction and use of a 48 CPU cluster based on PPC G4 processors running a PPC Linux distribution. We will examine the benefits and the pitfalls to using COTS PPC based hardware from Apple Computer and PPC Linux software. Included is a comparison of the use of Fast/Gigabit Ethernet built-in to each system to Myrinet hardware. In addition the PPC based cluster will be compared to more conventional clusters based on a variety of measures and for a variety of problems.
