The prospect of shorter schedule and lower resource cost in developing embedded systems has led to the increasing adoption of Linux as an alternative to commercial operation systems. There are lots of free and open source programs available for Linux system. Using Linux-based open source software as a component repository, a component-based development approach is presented to enable the rapid construction of complex software projects. Three major activities in this approach, architecture design, component selection and component integration are studied through the development of a real world digital video monitoring system. The experimental result shows that our implementation has its reliability and performance comparable with commercial products.
