Robotic techniques for measuring, offset calculation and subsequent repositioning of the part have been proposed, resulting in novel approaches for small offset kinematic modeling and for measuring parts of irregular shape using a CMM. A case study explored the implementation of the methodology for automatic fixture offset calculation, and solved a rank-deficient repositioning problem. Simulation results confirmed accurate fixture offsets, within the tolerances specified by the client. The methodology successfully automates the measurement of part offsets introduced by a simple clamping fixture, replacing the more costly and time-consuming manual calibration, and compensates for the offsets to enable manufacturing to proceed without human intervention under the same micrometer-scale tolerances of the traditional system.
