The main design impediment for next generation broadband wireless networks is usable bandwidth, which is limited and must be used as effectively as possible. Two technological solutions are presented for this purpose: spatial division multiple accesses (SDMA) using smart antennas and radio over fibre (RoF). Each of these provides better use of the frequency spectrum. The focus of this research is an innovative system that combines both solutions.
