Abstract

1 Opportunistic power control is proposed to yield multiuser diversity gain in the uplink of a CDMA system. The idea is to increase transmit power when the channel is good and decrease it when the channel is bad. The proposed al gorithm is distributed, iterative, and stable. It provides a much larger system throughput when compared with tra ditional target-tracking power control scheme. Its perfor mance can be further increased by employing interference cancellation. A 20% improvement can be made even if only the strongest signal is subtracted from the composite signal prior to demodulating other users’ signals.
