Model based Ellipse Fitting for the Estimation of the Cross Sectional Area in MR Images

In this article a new technique for the estimation of the cross sectional area of a vessel in three dimensional mag netic resonance angiography (MRA) is presented. There fore multi planar reconstruction (MPR) images perpendic ular to the vessel center line are used as input image for the fitting algorithm. The proposed ellipse fitting is based on the digitization process of an ideal ellipse image. It can be further reduced to a nonlinear optimization prob lem, which can be solved using standard optimization al gorithms. Moreover tests shows the effectiveness and ro bustness of the method presented.
