Abstract

The exposure of European coast to coastal hazard is high and scientific knowledge relevant for their mitigation is fragmented and poorly accessible to local authorities. Furthermore, coastal defence solutions, implemented at the local level, generally shift coastal problems to other locations. Starting from these evidences, coastal research projects aim to maximizing the benefits of future investments in coastline management through a review of best practices to implement sound coastal defence solutions, increased exchange and knowledge among local authorities, a specific focus on engineering techniques such as beach nourishment, beach drainage, wetland creation and restoration, dune rehabilitation and artificial reef creation.
