Ad-hoc network, energy efficient routing, virtual backbone formation
This paper presents a new power conservation scheme for multi-hop ad hoc networks. A virtual backbone consisting of special nodes (coordinators) is used for the power saving algorithm and routing. We present a new distributed algo rithm for constructing a connected dominating set (CDS) that is used to construct and maintain the virtual backbone of the network. Our scheme includes a message history based variable sleeping time for the non-coordinators. Simulations indicate that our scheme results in better power conservation than other practical schemes discussed in the literature if the network has a sparse message density.
