Abstract

The Xwindows system on UNIX and Linux operating sys tems is a widely used windowing system on graphic dis plays. The primary focus of the system was to efficiently display and easily port the GUIs across different operat ing systems (OS) and video cards. However, security of the system was not addressed: GUIs freely interact with other GUIs by reading or writing into their buffers without any regard to access control and other security mechanisms provided by the OS. In this paper we look into the problem of information leaks that can occur due to operations such as cut and paste among GUIs, and, discuss our solution to this problem.
