Abstract

To verify our previous theoretical prediction that disturbed flow distal to a stenosis enhances lipid accumulation at the blood/arterial wall interface, luminal surface albumin concentration was measured directly using a canine carotid arterial stenosis model. The results from the experiment demonstrated that due to the presence of a filtration flow, macromolecules accumulated at the blood/arterial wall interface. The luminal surface concentration of macromolecules can indeed be significantly enhanced in regions of disturbed flow.
