Adaptive Algorithm for Large Scale Terrain Rendering

This paper describes an adaptive algorithm for fast and efficient large scale terrain rendering with minimal memory and hardware requirements. The algorithm is developed in Computer Graphics and GIS Laboratory at Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš. The algorithm itself represents a combination of several modified advanced optimization and acceleration techniques for handling vast DEM data structures, which significantly exceed the limits of the available RAM memory. Some of these techniques are: GeoMipMaps usage, texture caching, dynamic data loading, etc. The GEOVISION system, which uses the described adaptive algorithm, is also presented in the paper.
