Abstract

The uncertainty of the hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer can be effectively included in an optimal cost pump-and treat remediation design for the containment of a contam inant through the use of a multi-scenario approach called robust optimization. Regional variations in the hydraulic conductivity field are shown to affect the efficiency of the robust optimization algorithm. After characterizing each hydrostratigraphic unit with a unique probability density function (PDF), the efficiency of the robust optimization algorithm is improved upon by employing an efficient sam pling technique known as equal-area sampling.
