Abstract

Faculty and student alike can benefit from studies involving current technologies through the use of Directed Independent Studies (DIS). Computer Science curricula are pretty well established and typically follow the ACM curricular recommendations [1] [2]. These guidelines recommend a well rounded foundation appropriate for a wide variety of occupations or further schooling beyond the undergraduate degree. Faculty can build upon this foundation to specialize the experience of undergraduate students through the use of directed independent studies (DIS). Moreover, technology is changing so rapidly that a standard computer science curriculum cannot keep pace with the changes in new software, methodology and development.
