Abstract

This paper presents a robust algorithm for the determination of slug length and slug velocity in pneumatic dense phase material flow with sub-sample resolution. These two parameters are crucial for material mass flow measurement and flow control. The slug length determination is based on a two step approach where first a difference operation and second the Fourier transform is applied to obtain significant narrow signal peaks, indicating slug beginnings and ends. The velocity estimate is also efficiently computed based on the Fourier transform. In order to verify the algorithms, a model is developed which allows the creation of different test cases.
