Abstract

Adaptive modulation is an important technique in software defined radio applications to automatically select the modulation scheme in order to maximize the capacity of data transmission and minimize transmission errors. In non-cooperative communication cases, the transmitter will not handshake with the receiver and the latter has to detect the modulation scheme blindly using automated modulation recognition methods. This paper reviews overall modulation recognition approaches, analyzes probability density function based algorithms, discusses the relationships between various implementations, and compares performance of several automated modulation recognition techniques. Theoretical analysis and simulation results are presented.
