modelling tool, model integration, forest inventory, and GIS
The article focuses on integration of geographical data management and a modelling environment. The main goal was to facilitate evaluation of models associated with emerging forest inventory methods. The design principle was to extend the functionality of a geographical infor mation system. An integrated subsystem allows attach ment of user defined statistical models to the geographical objects managed by the GIS software. The underlying structure strived to be very general to enable the tool to be used in varying use cases. This called for a hierarchical conceptual data model for the modelling tool that inte grates the models to the inventory data in a way where the model code is treated the same way as other data in the database. The modelling system was developed for ArcGIS software.
