Abstract

In an effort to extend the supply of electricity to rural areas of Botswana and to be able to collect revenue from customers, especially in the areas, prepaid meters have been introduced by the electric power utility of Botswana – Botswana Power Corporation (BPC). This paper explores both potential and realized benefits and impacts of the introduction of prepaid meters against original objectives and other dimensions which include economic, technical and social. The lessons from this service are a source of knowledge and insight for policy makers in other countries who wish to implement prepaid electricity service.
