Breakdown phenomena, impulse ionization, electromagnetic energy, X-rays.
This paper presents an investigation of the breakdown phenomena developed by solid organic insulating materials immersed in insulating oil. Experimental data support the claim that, during breakdown, an impulse ionization occurs, which can be attributed to the negative differential resistance effect. It is shown that the spectrum of the electromagnetic energy emitted during breakdown, is extended up to the area of soft X-rays.
