Abstract

In many works the primary response of a thermal power unit is assumed to be highly restricted. Thus, the contribution of a variable structure controller (VSC) was sought mainly to affect the load frequency control (LFC) response. Recently this assumption was shown to be false; instead the reset response should be restricted. This article reinvestigates the former results. In this frame the VSC design is facilitated and a simple and integral vector synthesis method is proposed. The method incorporates a min-max design that guarantees the reaching phase, and a pole placement technique to establish a desired sliding mode. The design is applied to a single area thermal system, which is frequently used in the literature. It is shown that if the new restrictions are considered, the proposed design enhances the VSC performances.
