Abstract

Gas Insulated Transmission Lines (GIL) are designed for bulk power transmission in EHV networks, especially for underground application. Compared to OHL or HV cables GIL have some outstanding technical properties. Due to the new design of the GIL of the 2nd generation the costs have been reduced decisively within the past few years so that GIL are very competitive compared with conven tional cable systems from the economic point of view. The technical advantages and the affordable costs enable new possibilities of the modernization and extension of existing EHV power grids. The article describes the decisive advantages of GIL and the new possibilities of network modernization.
