An Efficient Model and Specialized Algorithms for Cogeneration Planning

Cogeneration is a production technology in which two or more forms of energy are generated simultaneously. Combined heat and power (CHP) production has been used widely and trigeneration is booming. Cogeneration is universally accepted as the most energy-efficient technology to produce energy with lower fuel consumption and less emissions. In cogeneration, the production of multiple energy forms follows a joint characteristic, which means that the production planning of the multiple commodities should be done in coordination. Cost-efficient operation of a cogeneration energy system can be planned using an optimization model based on hourly forecast. A long-term planning model decomposes into hourly models, which can be formulated as linear programming (LP) or mixed integer programming (MIP) problems. In this paper, we present a generic hourly cogeneration model, which can accommodate any number of energy forms, as a MIP problem with special structure by extending a modeling technique for CHP problems. Then we discuss the potential merits of this formulation and present efficient specialized algorithms for solving the hourly models by the utilizing the structure of the problem. Finally, we compare the performance of specialized algorithms to demonstrate their efficiency.
