In this paper, we present a high-performance MPEG-4 Multipoint Control Unit (MPEG4MCU) for audiovisual communication over the Internet. MPEG-4 video is suitable for providing high video quality in the low network bandwidth especially in mobile IP environment. The design of MPEG4MCU is based on the OpenMCU, the opensource H.323 MCU project. Performance comparison between the MPEG4MCU and the OpenMCU shows that in each video conference room, the MPEG4MCU is able to support the number of users 100% greater than OpenMCU.
