This paper describes research and findings from research on smart environments and inter-device connections. Prototype smart spaces with devices and the infrastructure required for communication and control have been built, along with a central server for controlling these. The smart spaces created contain several inter-connected networks, each having their own application and purpose. The server connects these networks together and creates user interfaces for controlling the smart space. Centralised control and utilisation of different network types allow flexible modification and expansion of smart space control and communication. Current research is centred on developing new ways of connecting devices together and creating flexible user interfaces and solutions for smart spaces. This paper also presents ideas for new technologies and plans for further research in the area.
