Abstract

The H.264/AVC standard, recently introduced, leaves a number of degrees of freedom in the choice of coding parameters, like the macroblock size and the motion vector accuracy. In this paper we present an evaluation of the effect of different choices in the motion estimation framework. Their impact on quality, compression and complexity is examined through a number of examples, by using the JM Reference Software version 7.2. Though preliminary, the results obtained show design guidelines which are very useful for commercial applications, the latter searching for the best compromise between quality and complexity.
