: this paper describes the challenges faced by Cedefop, the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, in the development of a unique collection of key digital documents in the field of vocational education and training. The first step was a reflection on the feasibility and the usefulness of a digital library covering vocational training issues. The paper addresses the main points: thoughts on standards and metadata, a definition of what is for us a digital library, an electronic library and a virtual library and the preservation of digital documents. The conclusion summarises the challenges of further acquisition, authenticity and copyright.
