A Web-based Learning Environment for Supporting Individualized Learning in Elementary Education

Abstract

: Web-based learning is increasingly playing a major role in tertiary education, but it is still at an infant stage and under-developed in elementary education. This paper presents a Web-based English Learning System (WELS) to argue that web-based learning can equally be effective for elementary school students if it is deployed with a clear understanding and the skills to exploit the most appropriate technology for particular learning pedagogies. WELS highlights five dimensions of learning support based upon sound pedagogies and a range of teacher-centered as well as student-centered functionalities that are adaptive to the individual needs.
